What to Expect in 2020 from the Fall PPE Market
The industrial fall protection equipment market may exceed $ 3.8 billion by 2024, this report states. The expansion of construction activities around the globe correlated with the growing no.number of employees in this sector and stricter government regulations are driving demand for better fall protection equipment.
As Honeywell has been manufacturing fall protection equipment for over 75 years, we sat down with Thomas Dillon, Miller Fall Protection National Sales Manager, to better understand where the fall PPE market is now, as well as what customers should expect from fall protection PPE next year.
Tom, in terms of innovation, how has the fall protection PPE market evolved in the past decade and what is driving the change?
The market has changed substantially over the past 10+ years. The need and desire for higher quality and lightweight products has led to the creation of smaller, more durable PPE. At the same time, we also have seen an increase in demand for less expensive products, therefore, more affordable offerings have sprung on the market.
What are some of the challenges impeding market growth?
The technology used for fall protection equipment is developing slowly and the process is cumbersome. Oftentimes, the desire to embed technology into products is negated because of the cost it adds to the finished product. This and the existence of low quality, inexpensive products act as a restraining factor for growth.
From your experience, how open are customers to embracing new tech developments?
Since the technology in this industry evolves slowly, customer acceptance is also slow. Customers are reserved and not willing to change only for the sake of “new technology”, they need a good reason to do so.
In your opinion, what are the most relevant criteria when it comes to selecting the right fall protection PPE?
Fall protection equipment is application-driven. The wearer’s job tasks and the work environment are the most important factors when choosing a type of harness, connector or other fall-related PPE.
Harnesses used in welding feature heat-resistant fabric, for example, while harnesses designed for tower-climbing are often lightweight and with built-in seats. We have learned from our experience with leading-edge applications that using the wrong products in certain applications can be catastrophic.
How does Honeywell ensure its fall gear is of enhanced quality?
We are ISO certified. We have multiple checks and balances at our factories while products are being produced. We have certified in house testing facilities.
What role does fall protection training play in ensuring worker safety?
Training plays a big role in the fall protection process. Having the right fall protection PPE and being trained to use it is a crucial safety requirement, especially since OSHA fall protection violations remain the most frequently cited violations.
Honeywell offers a wide range of fall protection training solutions, for a variety of needs. Discover them, here.
What do you believe is or will be a major trend in fall protection PPE in 2020?
Honeywell will strive to build smaller, lighter and easier to use products. We’ll focus on single products that can be used in most applications, with minimum need for multiple types of training or extra additions to do the job.
